Share the Road

Day #2 of the bike commute and I’m doing fine. My legs are burning but I’m otherwise unscathed. Well, there was that patch of mud on Mid Campus Drive that splattered my perfectly clean white t-shirt on the way in this morning, but it came out after I stripped in the bathroom of EH and took soap and a few paper towels to it. (and You missed the show!)

One of my students is not doing so well, though. She came into class right as the bell for the end of the period rang (I hate those bells). She handed me a note from a KSU police officer, excusing her from class. She missed class to file a police report. A car stopped on a road somewhere on campus and someone in the car opened the door–right in the path of my innocent, biking student. She has a cut on her chin that required 5 stitches and is generally banged and bruised up.

Watch out for cyclists!

  1. If you just assume the car drivers are out to kill you—you will be safe.

And remember—you can use the entire road (all lanes).

Expect then to pitch you out at corners and to ‘brake check you’ So sprint around them on the left hand side and surprise them.

Cycling can be a beautiful sport.
