gendering your bike

leave a comment »

Your comments on the fixed-gear bikes call to mind everything I’ve ever read about “gendering” people and identity politics. We clothe ourselves with markers of our identity, whether we are aiming to project our sex or something else about us (politics, PETA-awareness, whathaveyou) and fixed-gear bikes obviously function as that sort of identity marker. Tatoos and other body art fulfill the same function–marking the body in a way to create, reinforce, and project an identity position.
